How Would You Cope with Losing a Horse?

“Somewhere...somewhere in time's own space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some Paradise where horses go.
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again.” – Stanley Harrison
Horses live between 18 to 30 years, and some can even live up to 40 years old. They grow up and age with us for many years while they gallop through time and grow into beautiful beings. It’s not hard to imagine the sorrow of losing such a longtime friend when a horse passes away. We know it’s an uneasy topic – but how would you deal with the loss of a magnificent soul when the time comes?
Most horse owners can opt for either cremation or ground burial. There are also less ideal options such as necropsy and disposal, which can be heart-wrenching for the owners. If you choose individual cremation, you can retain the ashes and place them in a full-sized memorial urn. Most services will come to pick up your pet angel any time of the day, and some equine crematoriums will allow you to watch the process. Of course, you will have to check with your local cremation services to make sure they offer whole horse cremation.
However, there’s one thing to bear in mind. An adult horse weighs 1,000 lbs on average and its ashes would weigh around 90 lbs. If you want to keep your horse angel’s ashes entirely, you would need a full-sized urn with a capacity of 1,100 cubic inches. Unfortunately, not that many pet urn retailers carry urns of that size, leaving horse owners with limited choices.
At Spritpet Urns, we can help you pick the right urn for your beloved horse angel. If you choose to have individual cremation and would like to retain all the ashes, we have full-sized artisanal horse urns starting at $825. Our pet urns are handmade individually by American artists to reflect our respect for your angels. They come in different colors and materials like wood and ceramics, depending on your preference.
One of our most special memorial vessel at Spiritpet Urns is a custom-made horse hair pottery urn. This is a piece that incorporates your angel’s tail horsehair to create a unique pattern onto the pottery’s surface. The horsehair pottery process ensures that each piece is one-of-a-kind, fully capturing the spirit of your beloved horse angel. Even if you choose to bury your horse, you can still create this beautiful memorial vessel by retaining some horsehair strands. If you need a larger urn size, we are also happy to accommodate your request. Contact us here for a quote or any questions you might have regarding our artisanal urns.
