A Life Time of Creating
This article is about celebrating my beloved father Robert V. Smith know as Bob Smith
December 2, 1929 to April 8, 2025
" Some artist leave behind paintings on a walls or signatures in books. Others leave behind something even more personal-heirloom works of art quietly become part of family traditions for generations. My dad was one of those.
For most of his life. Bob Smith created with his hands.
Wood carving was not simply something he did it became part of his rhythm of life he lived. Over the years, pieces would slowly transformed beneath his hands into beloved Santas filled with warmth, humor and personality. Each one carried its own spirit- lanterns glowing softly against winter nights, tiny birds resting nearby, snow covered evergreens, flowing carved beards and peaceful expressions that somehow made people smile the moment they saw them.
No two were ever exactly alike.
Collectors began seeking out Bob Smith's work not because it was trendy or mass produced because his carvings felt genuine and reflected the inner personality of the the man that created them.
They have become tradtional art and Christmas decor that people display with care in their homes around the holiday season.
But carving was only one part of his creativity.
Bob also created his own Christmas cards, bringing the same imagination, humor and artistic spirit into the greetings he sent to family and friends for over 40 years of celebrating the holiday season with the joy of sharing blessings with them each year.
As the years passed he continued carving steadily and faithfully.
By the time he reached his late eighties and early nineties arthristis had begun to affect his hands. The carving became slower. The details required more patience. The work he once did effortlessly demanded determination and persistence. Yet even then he continued to create.
There is something profoundly moving about and artist who keeps working through aging hands simply because creating has beome a part of this soul.
Bob Smith passed away peacefully in the afternoon of April 8, 2025
He leaves a legacy of amazing heirloom art that will be passed down for generations and a family and friends that miss his presence everday.
